Fifteen women are murdered every day in South Africa.

Fifteen women!

The G20 Summit, which took place on 22–23 November in Johannesburg, South Africa, marked the first time the summit was held in the country and on the African continent. Under the theme of “solidarity, equality, and sustainability,” the summit called for a unified global effort, fair treatment, and opportunities for all. These principles cannot be fully realised without addressing South Africa’s plight of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), which fundamentally undermines these principles.

Before the G20 met, GBVF activists, South African women, and members of the LGBTQI+ community moved to distance themselves from all economic and social activity through a national shutdown as a demonstration of resistance to the war waged against women’s bodies in South Africa.
