Safe Abortion is Life-saving Healthcare: International Safe Abortion Day Imbizo

ree

On 29 September 2025, Ibis Reproductive Health, in partnership with Section27, Soul City Institute, MB Teen Lifestyle, Accountability International, Ipas Africa Southern Region, and Tiko, commemorated International Safe Abortion Day (ISAD) with an Imbizo held at The Forge in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. A Zulu term, imbizo, refers to a traditional community gathering organized by a traditional leader or chief to resolve community issues and build consensus. This year’s Imbizo aimed to create space for meaningful dialogue about safe abortion access. Our Imbizo brought together 100 young people and activists to explore how values, attitudes, and societal norms shape perspectives on abortion access.

The Imbizo started with a Values Clarification and Attitudes Transformation (VCAT) workshop where young people explored how moral, religious, and societal values shape and inform their perceptions about abortion. Young people shared their opinions and perspectives openly, learning from each other about the importance of choice in accessing safe, high-quality abortion care in South Africa.

Building on the insights shared during the VCAT workshop, investigative journalist and Ibis Reproductive Health board member Ms Claire Mawisa led a multi-sectoral panel discussion titled “An Unstoppable Movement of Resistance and Solidarity for Safe Abortion”. The panel featured diverse voices — abortion providers, researchers, legal experts, religious commentators, and activists — who emphasized the urgent need to destigmatize abortion and ensure that everyone, regardless of their age, background, ability, religion, and/or identity, can exercise control over their bodies and their future.
